Swan Lake Long Beach Theatre reviews
KOL in Lexington Rupp Arena
This was the first time for me to experience Swan Lake live, and it was definitely worth the journey! A very good mood seemed to be in Caleb (lead singer, rhythm guitar), which was explained later in the show when he mentioned they were nearing the end of the tour and going home at the end of the night to sleep in their own beds for once. Even with a missed note at the beginning of "Closer" to open the set, and Caleb's guitar cutting out about 7 songs into the set (Revelry), he was still all smiles.
For this particular night, the last album was the focus. They played all but one of the songs from Only By the Night, and threw in a few from the older albums as well, although there was only one from the first album, Molly's Chambers, played at the now usual slower speed. For whatever reason, the slightly slower speed also applied to a few of the older songs, like "Four Kicks" and "The Bucket," but that's about the only negative thing I could mention about the show. It felt like there should be more songs from the older albums, even though 10 of the songs played were from previous albums, but with the song "Black Thumbnail," the end of the show came, which still seemed too short even after nearly 2 hours.
My ears were ringing for quite a while after the show. Not so much from the band themselves, who were fairly loud. I swear at some points I could feel my hair move from the bass drum hits sometimes. But it was the screaming crowd in between the songs that made me wonder if I'd be able to hear anything the next day. I'd take that as a good sign that a lot of other people enjoyed the show as much as I did!
After a break and a new album, which no doubt will probably be different from the last, as each CD so far has been completely different from the one before, they will hopefully be back.
